On Your Own

Once you established
your blindness to the U. S.
government (it took

a lawyer) you went
to Rome. Autumnal sunshine
on the courtyard where,

an Audrey Hepburn
type with an aura of chic
brave independence,

you sipped your morning
espresso and munched a thin
egg-salad sandwich.

A new beginning!
I’m not in the picture. I
would have paraphrased

such necessity
is the friend of freedom
! I
would have felt the cold

of disapproval
as you smiled and put on your
smart new dark glasses.
