Thunder and lightning
and rain last night, this morning
the near in relief.
The geese call from un-
der the bridge. Flagstones darkly
shining. The way points
to a together-
ness of the conversation
of self and other
as other. A black
lab yanks its leash toward a
familiar bush.

The black lab – neat touch, Tom. Is this the metaphorical ‘black dog’ of depression – or am I overthinking?

Neat allusion, Mark. The swerve — thank you Horace— of that final stanza would certainly support that association. The ‘difficulty’ of open communication as parsed in the penultimate stanza is certainly avoided by the lab’s instinctive pull. Life in the between is defined by these pulls.
