Outlive childhood and
stories will come, Flannery
O’Connor once wrote.
Outliving old age
has other consolations.
You remember how
she leaned her head on
your soft shoulder, not once or
twice? A crowded room,
alone on the edge
of the abyss, youth and age
together, but not
a story. A myth,
say, an image of Eros,
true, beside himself.
