You place your feet flat
on the cold floor and end up
standing. You are old,
it’s the first day of
the rest of your life. You try
not to think about
it. A little cry
comes from your body as if
to say, Don’t leave me
just yet, you owe me.
We’ll sort out just what you owe—-
it will break the bank.
