WORK IN PROGRESS
Taxes due: after
the April sacrifice, long
contemplative days.
The beach grass greening.
A solitary egret—
upright, elegant.
I watch it till my
eyes grow tired. It’s still
there as darkness falls.
Reluctantly I
go home and watch the news: war,
all-too-human war.
